Committed to furthering the cause of promoting literacy in remote tribal & rural villages in India resulting in an overall development of the areas.

To set up 100,000 one teacher schools by 2015. The movement envisions one Ekal School in every remote/tribal village where no school exists today. These schools provide basic primary education through the 3rd grade and prepare the children for further education in nearby towns when they are ready to walk alone. These schools play a very effective role in bringing the village girls out of the illiteracy cycle, a key requirement to transform the family’s future.

To date 26,8807 schools are already functional with 772,065 (as of Dec 2008) children receiving basic primary education.

No infrastructure required * Easy to replicate * Schools require only “one dollar a day” or $365 a year and become self-financing in 5 years * Overhead in raising and distributing these funds to India is less than 8% * Volunteers and NGO’s bring the cost down

Single teacher volunteer from the community, with community-defined school schedule that fits the lifestyle of the community ? Spreads through neighboring schools wanting to “emulate”

Minimal overhead eliminates politics and corruption. Direct Family School Relationship. Progress of schools and Spending of funds completely visible to sponsors
